A "photo journal" from the seat of my wheelchair

Weekly Photo Challenge: Together

Mr. and Mrs. Merganser, floating along on Lycoming Creek, in North Central Pennsylvania. They are a ‘Sawbill’ duck. He’s very sleek and handsome, she appears to be ‘having a bad hair day’ every day. 🙂

  1. Ooh. Are they common there on LC?

    • Scott, they seem to be. I was seeing them for about two years, from a distance, thinking they were loons (as they have a similar silhouette). My former camera didn’t have the zoom capacity of my current camera, so I couldn’t get a good look at them, even now, as you can see from the graininess of this picture, they are often too far away and in the shade for a clear image. I’ve seen a Mrs. with babies, last year. She had approximately 10 ducklings with her. This year already I’ve seen two pairs swimming together. I’ve seen several flying over the creek on different occasions.

The ones I’ve photographed that shouldn’t be here, according to the field guide, are Buffleheads – a diving duck. I’ve seen two pair of Buffleheads, for several weeks, though they seem to have finally moved on.

      • Isn’t it great what new vistas a new camera opens for us?

      • Yes, it certainly is… what an eye opener. 🙂
